MARTIN HISTORY. Founded in 1913, Aston Martin has always been a very special, specialist carmaker. Smitten with
funding issues throughout its existence, it has been invariably a high-class sporting manufacturer with racing flowing
through its veins. Its name originates with Lionel Martin, one of the firm's founders, and the Aston Clinton hillclimb
course, where the company tested many of its prototypes. Although the first production machines did not appear until
1915, the intervention of the First World War and various management issues led to it developing a name in the racing
scene long before it concentrated solely on road-going machinery from 1936, although only around 700 were produced
before the Second World War created another hiccough in the company's development. Although originally established in
Kensington, London, the company relocated to Feltham, Middlesex, before being rescued by the David Brown company and
based at new premises in Newport Pagnell, adjacent to what is now known as Milton Keynes. Various financial issues
occurred, although the famous DB line-up of models did appear, culminating in the exciting Victor Gauntlett years
prior to Ford Motor Company acquiring 75% of the company in 1987, taking over completely in 1993. Naturally, this led
to a range of sister models being created with Jaguar Cars (also under Ford ownership) and Aston Martin became a
senior brand in the Premier Automotive Group line-up. However, the company was again struck by financial issues, in
mid-2006, this time created by Ford's greater world-wide problems. Thus, the company found itself placed on the
market, once more, despite the most successful period of existence occuring through the 1990s and into the New
