manufacturer, it was a company possessing an edge to which few of its indigenous rivals could lay claim. The company
founder, Soichiro Honda, became as important a component of the bike racing scene as Enzo Ferrari did in the Formula
One arena. An unashamed fascination for things mechanical led the young Honda engineer into forging a fresh sense of
direction with every attempt to squeeze more power from small capacity, internal combustion engines. Amazingly, with
more than 14million motors being produced by the company annually, it is the world's largest engine maker and its
development of marine, gardening and leisure machinery also ensures its independence. However, apart from becoming the
manufacturer of the world's Number One motorised form of transport, the inimitable Honda moped, which is built and is
sold in immense quantities world-wide, it was Soichiro's venture into motor racing that led to a more enterprising
plan. A long time Anglophile, without help from the UK government of the day, Honda established a car-making plant at
Swindon, Wiltshire. The plan was to create a mutually agreeable manufacturing arrangement with the one-time
Austin-Rover group. Naturally, Formula One successes came and went, but so did the relationship with Britain's former
major carmaker, when its assets were sold off to German manufacturer BMW. Despite a blossoming relationship, the
UK-friendly company was not allowed to table an offer and, at great disappointment to Mr Honda, the Swindon-based firm
was forced into making a future-altering decision. It did it. It remained in the UK and continued to develop its
