and Gaydon-based manufacturer of 4x4 vehicles is no less than a British icon in the motoring scene. Yet it is a
troubled one, having struggled to make profits since BMW sold the business to Ford Motor Company for £1.8billion in
2000. Land Rover was originally just one vehicle; an all-terrain, utility machine, styled after a military vehicle,
but aimed at civilian operation. It was designed and developed by Rover stylist, Maurice Wilks, in 1947, using a
Willys Jeep as its inspiration and making its launch appearance at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show. To begin with, the
car was a product of Rover. It was produced from an allopy of aluminium and magnesium called Birmabright, which did
not rust and was readily available in the post-WW2 period, at a time when steel was not available and aircraft grade
aluminium was. Fairly soon, a line-up of different Land Rover models had been produced. In 1967, Rover became a part
of the new Leyland Motors Ltd (later, British Leyland) and in 1970, the radical Range Rover, which would change the
face and image of 4x4 vehicles, was launched. In 1975, British Leyland collapsed and Land Rover was hived off to a
commercial vehicles division called Land Rover Leyland Group. One year later, the millionth vehicle left the
production lines. In 1980, Rover production ended at Solihull, which left the island-factory to Land Rover. In 1986,
the company was swallowed up by the re-nationalised BL Group to become Rover Group plc. Two years later, its was
privatised and sold to British Aerospace, which was sold again to BMW in 1994. In a much-publicised sell-off and
asset-stripping exercise, Land Rover was sold to Ford in 2000. Its lack of profits stems from the introduction of four
new models in the intervening period and it is now closely allied to Jaguar Cars, also owned by Ford, with which it
shares much technology. If you want a good used or nearly new Land Rover Freelander, Discovery, Range Rover Sport or
