MERCEDES HISTORY. "Often regarded as the originator of the motorcar, Karl Benz established his company in 1871.
However, Mercedes-Benz was only formed in 1926, when the Daimler-Benz company was formed from Benz & Cie and Daimler
Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) following several years of bitter rivalry. In fact the founders of DMG, Gottlieb Daimler
and Wilhelm Maybach, had already died or departed their business but, out of post-WW1 economic necessity, the two
firms signed an "Agreement of Mutual Interest" that was valid until the year 2000 and was signed in 1924. It
entitled the separate firms to produce their own motor vehicles under their own brand names. Yet, it was 1926 before
the first Mercedes-Benz products were produced and marketed. It is the continuous link back to Karl Benz that makes
Mercedes-Benz officially the oldest carmaker in the world. It was Gottlieb Daimler who devised the
"Three-Pointed-Star", which represented the three key areas of transport - on land, sea and sky - and first
appearaed on a DMG product in 1909. Sadly, Daimler's name became compromised following his death in 1900 and was
allowed to be used on other motor vehicles. The laurel ring on the company's badge is Benz's contribution. However,
today's accepted company logo was used for the first time in 1937. The company has long been an advocate of automotive
innovation often bringing to the market a confusing array of acronyms for its many and varied inventions. However, the
final piece of the jigsaw occurred in 1998, when, urged by Deutsche Bank, Daimler-Benz made a merger bid with the
North American Chrysler Corporation. The resultant and sometimes troubled DaimlerChrysler company was formed as a
stated "merger of equals"." The great thing is that no Mercedes-Benzcar depreciates badly. So Mercedes can offer
