Buy Cheap New Perodua
Malaysia’s “other” carmaker is also a company linked indirectly to Toyota. Although it might not seem obvious, the
Daihatsu product range is passed over to Perodua, often before Daihatsu, which is a Toyota-dependent, is finished with
it. So, Perodua currently sells into the UK market the Kelisa, which is a former Cuore hatchback model, the Kenari,
which is a former Daihatsu Move sub-compact MPV, and the Myvi, which is the current Daihatsu Charade. Interestingly,
the company is very new, having been established as recently as 1992, as a joint-venture with Daihatsu, the Malaysian
side owning 75% of the stock at the outset, a situation that altered in December 2001, when Daihatsu increased its
stake to 35%, which is enough to control but not own the business. The actual production volumes are still quite
small, with the company only producing around 140,000 motorcars every year, however, the fortunes of this small player
are improving all the time, especially with the might of Toyota behind Daihatsu and Perodua having satisfied a large
percentage of its domestic requirement in a market that it shares with Proton, which produces only around 10% more
product every year, but does hold the Number One sales position in Malaysia. The UK operation is a concession selling
only the three aforementioned models of the six-model line-up. Most of the UK dealer network are of the smaller but no
less industrious types of outlets, with a good spread of representation across the country.
