The archetypal rear-engined sports car continues in its latest 997 form as a world-beater in so many ways. While its typical rear-engined handling traits have now been tamed to the extent that some traditionalists have become disappointed by the 911 model for its lack of handling edginess and reduced driver appeal, the simple truth was that drivers unfamiliar with the pendulum effects of earlier models might become seriously unstuck at the worst possible times, so a fresh approach was made to the chassis and its suspension to curb any wayward behaviour arising from tacking an engine behind the rear axle line. Yet, sales continue at an unabated level, so the purists may feel that they have been "cheated" in some way, but the vast majority of Porsche 911 buyers are more than delighted with the combination of dynamic strengths provided by the latest developments. Notably less expensive than any of its supercar rivals, the 911 remains a hugely involving sports car that, while placing fewer demands on the inherent skills of its drivers, still provides dynamic thrills by the bucketload. However, none of its enormous raft of benefits has come at the cost of its long-standing stance on space and practicality. Despite sticking the engine under a cover at the rear of the car, owners are provided with two boot areas - one at the front and another behind the front seats, which can be used as a very occasional passenger carrying area. The cockpit is designed to accommodate two very tall occupants and the characterful flat-six petrol engine, in its various normally aspirated and turbocharged guises, develops enough power to enable stunning performance allied to outstanding frugality. A well-driven 911 can still achieve in excess of 30mpg.
