Hayek, the Managing Director of Swatch, the innovative Swiss watch manufacturer, who introduced Swiss timekeeping in

company, he felt that the time had arrived to produce the ultimate city car for a mass market. If you read Smart

especially taking current city centre traffic situations into account. Unfortunately, despite having the design
capabilities at his disposal, he was and is not a carmaker. He desperately required a car manufacturer to take the
project on-board and nearly made it work with Volkswagen Group, except that VW felt that it was going the wrong way
for its business. The design was refined by VW but the project never reached road applications. Therefore, Hayek took
the project to DaimlerChrysler. The Micro Compact Car company was started in 1994, which retains the business name,
launched its all-new and exciting city-coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997. However, by this time, Hayek, having
realised that the costs involved in producing the three-cylinder engine were exorbitant and almost as much as any
conventional family car, withdrew from the partnership, having incurred considerable financial losses. Mercedes-Benz
continued with the project forming a convenient acronym s-m-art, which stood for Swatch-Mercedes-art, or smart (in
lower-case). The company name was changed to a German limited liability and in 2002 the logo altered to the current
