Chrysler is a brand name that seems to have whizzed into British consciousness only since its fusion then divorce with Daimler-Benz in 1988 (forming DaimlerChrysler). But that would be to ignore a big slice of automotive history, which even included car production in pre-WW2 London. Chrysler was originally established back in 1925, its present HQ remains at Auburn Hills, on Lake Michigan. Chrysler acquired or reinvented assets of a handful of brands such as De Soto, Plymouth, Dodge and the luxurious Imperial. Chrysler was perceived as the all-American alternative to GM and, despite numerous financial problems, Chrysler did have similar development. Chrysler had always been a fairly innovative car maker and for example, employed the Amercan Motor Industry's first wind tunnel for the scientific development of an all new model, the Chrysler Airflow (in 1934). Innovations continued, but it took until 1960 before the following development proved memorable. Chrysler introduced the "uni-body construction" to all its model lines. In other words, the cars had no separate (and weighty) chassis. This took over as the preferred method of making all motor cars. Next, the "Hemi" engine (named because of a hemispherical style of the cylinder head), had been introduced some years earlier. Later, in 1966, Chrysler expanded its business into Europe, taking over Rootes Group in the UK, also Simca in France and Barrieros in Spain. These newly acquired brands and bases formed "Chrysler Europe". It didn't work out so some 12 years later, the brands were sold to the French PSA company - with the truck assets going to Renault. Chrysler suffered its biggest financial problems soon after, although a rescue bid saw numerous market-leading products and innovations being launched. The arrival of DaimlerChrysler was heralded as a multi-cultural strategic partnership - but Daimler found to its cost that the tie up with Chrysler was strategically flawed. The new combined company separated - with the Chrysler element being purchased by Private Equity Firm Cerberus. Even this change in direction failed to prove a success, and Fiat of Italy acquiring a minority stake in Chrysler. Fiat's plan is to utilise some of Chrysler's US plants and retail network to establish both Fiat and Alfa Romeo in the noprth American market.
