Maybach today consists of a two-model line-up; Maybach is a brand with a remarkable history that has been resurrected by modern-day Mercedes-Benz. While the ultimate market for the world's most opulent and extravagantly equipped motorcars is limited to Heads of State, senior league artistes from the pop, rock, acting and artistic arenas and the odd potentate, it is said that our world's wealthiest people are growing in both number and monetary worth. Therefore, the raft of critics that believed Mercedes-Benz was making an ill-judged decision to introduce such a prodigious machine may be forced into eating humble pie. There is no denying the fact that the Maybach remains a strictly rare machine. The original Maybach company was established in 1921 and initially made engines for Zeppelin airships, gradually moving into the prestige car business some years later. Around 1800 Maybach cars were sold prior to WW2. Mercedes-Benz created a prototype Maybach in 1997 for a debut at the Tokyo Motor Show that year. Having gained a very warm reception, Mercedes-Benz then decided to remarket the new model under the Maybach name. Two different wheelbase versions were launched in 2002 - the 57 and the longer 62 - both powered by 5.5-litre V12 engines that produced 543bhp and a nominal 1000Nm of torque, which should be enough to tow a small country behind your Maybach!
