Saab the Swedish car maker has become a somewhat watered-down version of its former self. Saab now produces a vastly reduced number of 9-3 and 9-5 models together and with several Cadillac derivatives. General Motors bought 50% of the Saab in 1990 and took over completely in 2000; GM must have wondered what to do with its new Scandinavian interest, having sold off its other global car stakes (in companies such as Subaru and Suzuki). A concerted effort took place at Trollhattan and Gothenburg, whilst the next generation is said to be relocated to other European plants. This was seen as necessary as a move to help Saab to make money and survive in the market place as a premium brand. Meantime, the 9-3 and 9-5 model ranges record decent sales in the UK, supported by a network of dedicated and motivated dealers who can actually persuade their customers and demonstrate the brand values to create long term loyalty (Saab owners are a pretty loyal bunch). Saab history is the remaining attraction; its past is steeped within the aero nautical industry; Scania trucks and a Saab rally motor sport past that is the stuff of legend. The Saab company was managed by luminaries such as Eric "On the Roof" Carlsson, who even now, remains a firm supporter and emissary for the Saab brand; Stig Blomqvist and Per Eklund, each of whom cut their rally teeth in a Saab motor car, and went on to perpetrate a myth that Saab could effectively compete in the international rally scene - and win.
