New Aston Martin DBS New Aston Martin Vantage Coupe New Aston Martin Vantage Roadster |
Aston Martin has produced some of the most evocative exotic cars of all time and is one of the most high-profile and recognisable brand names in the world. High profile customers such as the fictional James Bond have ensured that the marque's very English image remains unchallenged. The current Aston Martin model line-up is exceptional - and includes the V8 Vantage, the new DBS, DB9, DB9 Volante, Vanquish S and V8 Vantage Roadster. Aston Martin was voted the UK's coolest brand in 2006.
The Aston Martin name originated with a Mr Lionel Martin, one of the firm's original founders, and the Aston Clinton hill climb course, where Aston Martin tested many of its early prototypes. Aston Martin, founded back in 1913, was always a very special, at times bespoke, specialised car maker. Funding problems have arisen repeatedly throug its long existence, but it has remained a manufacturer of the high-class supercars. Competition constinues to flow through its blue veins - often campaigned by wealthy and notable privateers. Though the first production cars didn't appear until 1915, the First World War (together with numerous management problems at that time) led it to develop a racing name on circuits, long before it specialised in road cars, although only around 700 were produced until 1936. The Second World War created another hurdle in Aston Martin's development. Although first established in London (Kensington), Aston Martin relocated to Feltham, Middlesex, before a financial crisis led to the company being rescued by David Brown & Co. which moved Aston Martin to new premises in Newport Pagnell, nearby the New Town of Milton Keynes. Various financial problems persisted, however the famous Aston Martin DB line-up of models did appear. In 1987, Victor Gauntlett acquired the business and eventually sold to Ford Motor Company, which acquired a 75% share of the company. Ford then took complete control of Aston Martin in 1993. Needless to say, Ford's control led to a range of Jaguar-based models (Jaguar was also then under Ford ownership) and Aston Martin became a senior brand within Ford's Premier Automotive Group (PAG) line-up. However, Aston Martin was struck again by a financial crisis caused by Ford's greater world-wide problems, in 2006. Aston Martin found itself put up for sale, on the market yet again, despite a successful period throughout into the New Millennium. The latest owners are based in the UAE.
