Land Rover, the Solihull and Gaydon-based manufacturer of 4x4 vehicles is no less than a British icon in the motoring scene. Yet Land Rover is a troubled company, having struggled to make profits since BMW sold the business to Ford Motor Company for £1.8billion in 2000 and Ford sold to Tata of India in 2008. Land Rover was originally just one crude vehicle; an all-terrain, utility machine, styled after a military vehicle, but aimed at post-war civilian use. It was designed and developed in 1947 by Maurice Wilks, a Rover stylist, using the Willys Jeep as its inspiration, making its first appearance at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948. To begin with, the Land Rover was a model of the Rover company. The Land Rover was produced from an allopy of aluminium and magnesium called Birmabright, which didn't rust and was in ready supply after the war (at a time when steel was unavailable but aircraft grade aluminium was). Success led to a line-up of different Land Rover models and in 1967, Rover was absorbed by the new Leyland Motors Ltd (which later became British Leyland). 1970 was a milestone; Land Rover launched the radical new Range Rover V8, which went on to change the face and image of 4x4 vehicles for ever. By 1975, British Leyland had collapsed and Land Rover became Land Rover Leyland Group. A year on, the millionth Land Rover vehicle left its production lines. But Rover production ended at Solihull in 1980, and this left the island-factory to Land Rover. In 1986, Land Rover was swallowed up by the re-nationalised BL Group to become Rover Group plc, then two years later, it was sold to British Aerospace, which in turn was sold in 1994 to BMW. Land Rover was sold to Ford in 2000 then sold again in 2008, this time to Tata.
