Suzuki is known as much for motorbikes as its cars; rather like Honda. However, unlike Honda, Suzuki didn't manage to hang on to its independence. General Motors commenced business links in 1981 and Suzuki started to make "own label" motor cars (as food manufacturers do for different supermarket chains) in several markets. By 1998, the Suzuki/ GM relationship grew into a strategic partnership, but this was diminished in 2006, when General Motors sold its shares back to Suzuki Corporation (this followed pension upheaval in GMs domestic market); Whilst GM's share reduced to around 3% of Suzuki, the Japanese car and motorcycle maker is stronger than ever.
