Seat was founded back in 1950, when President Franco's was ruling Spain. The Seat name is an acronym which stands for Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo. This effectively has the meaning "Corporation of Touring Cars", which to many observers may be a very appropriate name for a brand that so heavily linked with the World of British Touring Cars. Seat is pronounced in several ways, but it is not something on which one would sit, annunciated as "Say-att". Typical of Fiat Group in the pre-General Motors period, Fiat would seek out car making niche companies all around the world to widen its activity sphere. Spain was a country with few indigenous car businesses (though Pegaso comes to mind). Seat and Fiat established a factory in Barcelona with a large slice of the business being given to the Franco government; it produced a range of cars that were all Fiat-related (often the former generation models, with older production line technology, which was deemed appropriate for Seat). Franco's demise brought a return to democracy, and Volkswagen Group was chosen as the suitor after Fiat back in 1981. VW became the majority shareholder in Seat by 1986 and completed a full takeover of Seat in 1990. Since that time, Seat's headquarters were relocated in Martorell, on the outskirts of Barcelona. Some 450,000 Seat cars are produced there each year, with some of them sporting a VW badge, as both Seat and VW models are produced at that plant. Some Seats are made in different parts of Europe, which is part of a broader Europeanisation of the Seat factory and its model lineup. Known for its sunny and sporty stance, Seat cars retain Volkswagen's reputation for a high build quality combined with excellent engineering standards.
