Maserati, is but one of the handful of names that fills the spirit with enthusiasm and joy. This is a car company that possesses a glorious history. Its origins lie in the combined efforts of the Maserati brothers. Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, Ernesto and Mario were the enterprising family members, who found themselves being drawn inexorably to an involvement somewhere around the car making business. Although founded in 1914, the first Maserati motorcars appeared in 1926. In fact, Alfieri, who died in 1932, raced in one of his own cars and won the infamous Targa Florio in its inaugural year of production. In 1937, the remaining members of the family sold their interests in the business to the Orsi family, which relocated its headquarters to Modena in 1940, where it remains today, in that heartland of Italian design, engineering and automotive expertise. Many of the company's remarkable race victories with its most fantastic ranges of race and road cars were delivered during this period, with the famous Argentinian driver, Juan Manuel Fangio at the controls. It was indeed Maserati's glory period. However, slightly strapped for cash and with a perceived need to make the company grow, the Orsi family sold its interests out to Citroen and the French carmaker, keen to introduce many of its advanced technological ideas to Maserati, ploughed funds into the Italian specialist. Unfortunately, the 1973 oil crisis struck, Citroen went bankrupt and the new controlling group, PSA Peugeot Citroen, also declared that Maserati was bust. The Italian government stepped in as a holding operation until early 1975, when De Tomaso bought it. He survived with the firm until 1993, when Fiat took control of the company. Just four years later, in an internal change of ownership, a 50% stake was sold to Ferrari, Maserati's long-time rival, which was also owned by Fiat Group. Since the demise of the Fiat-GM partnership, Fiat has found itself in 100% ownership of Maserati all over again. What is it they say about what goes around, comes around?
