However, this was an extraordinary decade for Mazda, which introduced rotary engines and a sports car among a range of genuinely innovative yet amazingly desirable family cars. The 70s had a great start but ended less well, with Mazda experiencing a major financial crisis. Ford came to the rescue and, to put it simply, Mazda never looked back. Ford's management on the company also brought about a less creative period until early-2000 when a non-stop run of exciting new models enabled Mazda to break all previous sales records. Mazda also made money and encouraged a remarkable cross-section of car buyers to try Mazda for the first time.
