Subaru is a subsidiary of Japan's Fuji Heavy Industries, a highly successful industrial conglomerate. Unlike many rivals, the stand-alone Subaru brand is not named after its founder, but after a solar arrangement. Subaru means "Pleiades", which is a star cluster with the meaning "Seven Sisters". The Subaru logo is represented by the six stars visible within the southern hemisphere. Conveniently, the six star cluster on Subaru's logo represents five companies that joined following the World War Two. The five comapnies form the one star business. Nakajima Aircraft was one of the founding firms that formed the Subaru car division. Subaru produced the 14-cyl aero engines that powered Mitsubishi Zero fighters in World War Two. Although a modest car company, Subaru has been surprisingly profitable; a company that has centred on 4WD for the majority of its model range. Subaru is best known for conventional looking saloons and estates with 4WD transmissions. General Motors purchased a 20% stake in Fuji Heavy Industries in 1999, when on an acquisitions trail. GM's stake was previously owned by Nissan, prior to the N American agreement. The arrangement with General Motors led to several cross-over products being built with other partners and this resulted in a model commonly known as "Saabaru". Essentially a Subaru Impreza sold as a Saab 9-2X in the N American market. Toyota is a 16% shareholder in Subaru, since it bought 9% of General Motors' stake, with the N American giant fighting financial fires in its home market. Subaru has developed all new diesel technology; a hot 2.0L flat-four 167bhp unit has transfomed Subaru's market appeal.
