Citroen had been happily producing armaments for the First World War, when in 1919 it discovered that it owned a factory with no product! However, M. Citron was an amazing innovator and renegade. It is believed, that the Citroen "double chevron" design came from a doubled-up version of the freemason compasses. However, M. Citroen invented many things after 1919: the double-helical gear, used in gearboxes, engines and other engineering uses. Citroen was one of the few businesses to use the Eiffel Tower as an advertising billboard. M. Citroen sold his popular motorcars with a good degree of success but realised he was losing money; he determined that a monumental innovation (none of his rivals could compete with) was the best solution. And so the first Citroen Traction Avant was "born" in 1934. The Citroen Traction set standards that were stunning at the time and continue to be explored - to this day. The Citroen Traction Avant featured front wheel drive, inboard brakes, independent suspension and a unitary construction. Its introduction led to Citroen's demise, because it was so expensive to develop. Debts mounted and Citroen was unable to pay them. The Citroen business was sold Within months to its largest creditor, Michelin Tyre. Fortunately, development continued and the Light Fifteen soon followed. The ground breaking ID and DS models look futuristic even today, 50 years after their design. Suspension (height adjustment automatically) called Oleopneumatic had interlinked power assisted steering, braking system and with directional headlamps. Maserati was purchased in 1970s which proved costly; design innovation slowed to a near-stop and the final straw (rotary engine development) led to Citroen's acquisition by Peugeot. The PSA Group was formed out of these two companies between 1974 and 1976.
