Volkswagen is a firm that could never have continued without the effort of a Major in the British Army, based in Wolfsburg during the period immediately after World War 2. Volkswagen was originally established when Adolf Hitler's Reichs-Chancellorship was rebuilding Germany, and an advanced design commenced by Ferdinand Porsche was ordered to be built - though less expensively - by Adolf Hitler. Porsche's design borrowed the Czech, Hans Ledwinka's rear-engine principles. Ledwinka was the brains behind vehicle-maker, Tatra. A legal copyright claim commenced by Tatra, and this was resolved in 1961 to the tune of some DM3 Million. However, a number of somewhat unlikely individuals were involved at the birth of the Hitler "People's Car" ("Volks-Wagen") and the story is fascinating. Saving DM5 a week, German workers were able to buy their own car. The outline that formed the basis for one of the world's best-selling cars, the Beetle, was originally to be known as "KDF-wagen", fully "Kraft Durch Freude car" (this translates "strength through joy"). The car was to be built in Stuttgart from 1936. A new town, Kdf-Stadt was established surrounding the factory, and this town became known as Wolfsburg, near to what eventually became the Eastern German border. However, not one car was delivered to those German buyers presenting their fully completed savings card. Then, after the war, Major Ivan Hirst was entrusted with the creation of what became known as "war reparations", from the bombed car factory in 1945. Oldham-born Major Hirst involved surviving local workers in the rebuilding of the factory and then the cars. An initial order for some 20,000 Volkswagen cars was placed for the German Post Office, so it is that the British Army effectively gave Volkswagen an opportunity to survive. Hirst remained a manager at the Volkswagen factory until 1949.
