Bentley may be German-owned today (by Volkswagen Group) it is now separate from its previous life-partner, Rolls-Royce. Nothing diminishes the Englishness, the build quality excellence and elegance formed, as ever by hand. Bentley is still capable of gaining the respect and adulation of the motoring public, admirers and car critics across the globe. Yet, Bentley was a brand that could so easily have disappeared during its less than glorious British stewardship. For a number of years, Bentley was little more than a re-badged Rolls-Royce, available at a slightly lower price - because its production cost was lower due to fractionally less costly materials, though the Bentley was manufactured on the same Crewe lines as the Rolls-Royce. The combined R-R/B company produced a turbocharged model (called "Mulsanne Turbo" named after the famous corner at Le Mans) that set new performance standards and possessed remarkable dynamics. At 2.5 tons, this behemoth blasted to 60mph in under 6 seconds - stunning at that time. In true Rolls-Royce and Bentley tradition, nobody knew its real power output. The Mulsanne Turbo placed Bentley back on the map and created a compelling purchase for corporate and glitterati owners alike. The Mulsanne was replaced by the Arnage range and today, Bentley has built on its traditions of style, quality and high performance with the range of Continental Coupe, Saloon and Convertibles. The latest Bentley range is no useless status symbol; it is eminently capable and huge fun to drive, almost shockingly outstanding in its broad range of strengths. The current Bentley model line-up includes the Continental Coupe, the Flying Spur and GTC Convertible.
BENTLEY
Walter Owen Bentley founded Bentley Motors in England back in 1919. The first model was the rapid "3 Litre" Bentley. Bigger cars were to follow, and success racing at Le Mans earned the the status for Bentley among especially British sportscar enthusiasts. Financial troubles brought about the brand's sale to it's rival Rolls-Royce in 1931. That crisis was partly brought about by the Wall Street Crash in 1929. The "3.5 Litre" was the first new Bentley after the takeover by Rolls, introduced in 1933. The 3.5 was based on a Rolls-Royce chassis (which incidentally never saw production). Later on, Bentley slid into anonymity with models that were simply a rebadged Rolls-Royce. However, Bentley's fortunes took an upturn in the 1980s when a new company policy demanded a distinctive Bentley image. Bentley sales rose, and BMW began supplying engines to both Bentley and Rolls-Royce in 1988. Volkswagen made a surprise bid and purchased both marques (which created considerable conflict), but the two German car makers reached agreement that resulted in BMW gaining control of (and moving) Rolls Royce in 2003, whilst VW retained control of Bentley at the Crewe factory.
