Peugeot (or rather, PSA) is Europe's second biggest motor manufacturer, just behind Volkswagen. Peugeot is a company with a long and proud history which started with bicycles back in the 19th Century. The bike division was sold in 1926, to allow Peugeot to concentrate on its car production, but Peugeot bicycles continue to be produced in France until recently. Peugeot's HQ is in Paris and, it is perceived as being the senior partner within the PSA Group (Which incorporates Citroen). Peugeot has always been a highly innovative company and it was among the Euro-pioneers of personal motorised transportion. Peugeot was amongst the early car makers to equip its cars with pneumatic tyres. Peugeot also won the Indianapolis in 1916 and again in 1919. Its history in motorsport was blessed with victory laurels in both racing and rallying. In 1978, Peugeot took the bold step of buying Chrysler Europe assets from the troubled N American giant car maker, which meant it became the owner of the UK Rootes Group, which used to produce motorcars at Ryton near Coventry. Sadly, production at the UK plant ceased ceased in 2006, replaced by a newer, more profitable Slovakian facility, where the cost per car is considerably lower than the UK. Peugeot always names its car models with a middle number "0", the initial number of the 3-number set is the class model, while the last represents the model age; so a Peugeot 607 is bigger / newer than the 306. The numbering scheme has been altered with the introduction of another innovation from the French car maker, with the introduction of the 1007/4007 model lines.
